Marine Corp Ball
What a night! If only there were times you could bottle the experience. But, I suppose we do - in our heads, right? We sat with lovely people who made me laugh until my sides hurt. Thank you gang! We watched people dance (including a cheerleader exhibition by Ondrea - also thank you!), and some try to dance (present company included). There were lots of photo ops and other things I WISH we could have captured on photos.
What you can't capture is life in Kenya. We arrived for a 6 p.m. start but weren't moved into the tent until around 7ish...it was at this point, that we discovered we had no table. We were first in line to buy our tickets, but our table number was somehow lost. So, they found us an "extra" table set way in the back. Meanwhile, the program began around 7:20ish, and the first part of the meal was served around 8:20ish. By then, I'd watched, with great appreciation, our young marines share cake with the eldest in the room, heard a former marine, actor and NYPD cop give a nice talk and stood in a 20 minute bathroom line. When I returned from the little cottage after standing in line for a bit, we were moved to another "extra" table much closer to the dance floor (our original table maybe?). At that point, we stood in another buffet line for dinner and I think I sat down to actually eat around 8:40. Any other day of the year, all of these things might have ruffled me, but as I sat with 3 other couples who are like fresh water to my soul, I was able to find my happy place and simply enjoy myself.
So, now you know what happened that night. But, I'd like to say to all of the husbands out there, "If your wife says, 'Is this the best gurdle for this dress?' please answer HONESTLY!" Since honesty was not the approach taken at my house, I'll only be featuring photos from the neck up. (after I upload them) Despite my gurdle and girth issues, I still had a great time. My friends were very kind, and I appreciate that. Thank goodness my self-esteem is largely intact.

Every day stuff
I decided to start blogging more frequently and am suddenly at a loss for words, or stories. I guess these are the times that we reflect and know how lucky we are to have friends, and loved ones and children that can still make us laugh. They fill our homes with joy and laughter and sometimes yelling, but it's all good and we all are learning from one another each day.
We decorated for Halloween yesterday. I love the colors of Fall, and Halloween is the first holiday in that season, so I always decorate for the event and love to have a party. Inside, we have pumpkins and holiday candy, and yummy spicy smells. However, on the outside, we have plastic wrapping our door, blow up ghosts hanging in the trees, and flashing lights in the bushes. Joe says he can hear a banjo playing as he walks up, but that's the fun stuff, right? The kids love it! So, Happy Fall (and Halloween) to all of you out there who are equally in love with the season.
Well, I'm going to a church event, the Magdalena movie, in a little while. Lots of clothes to wash before I head out the door. And today is pumpkin carving afterwards, so I'd like to come home to something clean, at least. I hope it's well attended. I'm reading the Francine Rivers series, "Mark of the Lion." It's captivating. I can't put it down and know I'm obsessed when for one fleeting moment, I considered taking it with me to church today! hahaha. But, I'm sure the historical elements will be pervasive in the movie, as they are in the book. How interesting that suddenly I'm inundated with "Roman times."
Have a great week!

Still here
Clearly, I'm not an avid blogger since it's been 2 years! Wish I was. It seems this would be the most creative way to document our travels for family and friends, but alas, life takes over.
But, to catch you up...we've been in Nairobi for over 2 years now. Mary is 9, Will is 8 and Suzy is 2 (going on 15). Joe is in the same job at the Embassy and I have been working part-time as the Newsletter Editor at the Embassy for over a year now, and just quit. That whole "life" thing interfering once again. The kids and I will travel back to LA after Christmas to see Dad and family. If you know me well enough to read this, you know Dad is sick. We are still praying for him to continue to live a full, happy life, free of pain and worry. But, anyway, I quit my job to enjoy the holidays, our time away, and then focus on cleaning out and packing up for our next adventure!
Speaking of our "next" adventure. Joe turned in his bid list on Friday, so we are anxiously awaiting info on where we'll end up. Nothing looked awful, all seemed like nice places to go, but the waiting and NOT knowing is grueling.
I am teaching a Bible Study to ladies on Friday mornings. I absolutely love it. This time, it's on "Using Your Spiritual Gifts." We are all discovering our gifts along the way and it's like a big game of hide and seek! The journey has been a good one so far, and I always look forward to Friday's with my friends. God has so richly blessed us in this place. We have a great Christian school, lots of friends, and wonderful memories to take away with us. We'll be sad to go, but anxious to discover what lies around the corner.
In a most unusual turn of events, a Texas A&M game is on AFN tonight, which makes our house feel like "Fall" in Kenya! So, I'd better sign off - in hopes that the tradition of "kissing when you score" still stands around here! (Though we won't talk about A&M's current record...)
